Dr Douw Faurie is driving South Africa’s clean energy future with a breakthrough in hydrogen storage technology. His doctoral research at the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), has advanced metal hydride reactors from lab experiments to real-world applications using cutting-edge computational modelling and machine learning.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) calls on graduates from 2019 to 2025 to share their career journeys in the Graduate Destination Survey. The initiative aims to track alumni employment, understand challenges and strengthen TUT’s support for employability.

A joint effort by the Department of Cooperative Education, Quality Assurance, as well as Alumni Relations and Fundraising, the survey reflects TUT’s commitment to continuous improvement and student success.

Dr Roelien Brink, Director of Cooperative Education, explains, "It is important for the University to know how many of our graduates are employed and if they are not, why. This allows us to better prepare students for the workforce and help them secure their first placements."

The survey prioritises meaningful employment, encouraging graduates to work in fields aligned with their studies. Dr Brink adds, "Being employed is not enough. Working in your chosen industry ensures you gain relevant experience and skills."

TUT urges students to prepare early through community engagement, service learning, volunteering and industry interaction. "Experience is essential. A qualification alone does not guarantee a job," Dr Brink stresses.

Graduates who complete the survey will also enter a draw for Full Cycle of Grace prizes, including custom pens, USB drives and small radios to stay connected with TUT FM and the Plug-a-Graduate initiative.

"Your feedback matters," Dr Brink says. "It assists us to improve programmes, strengthen partnerships and ensure future graduates are ready for the world of work. Your voice can help shape the University and the success of generations to come."
