The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Disability Unit reinforced its commitment to creating an inclusive campus environment by hosting a Disability Awareness event at the Ga-Rankuwa Campus recently. Although there is an increase in general awareness, the initiative aimed to promote understanding, equal participation and support for people with disabilities within the University community.
The event, “Breaking Barriers, Embracing Diversity: Championing Institutional Support and Community Integration for Disability Advocacy”, encouraged staff and students to embrace diversity and actively accommodate individuals with disabilities.
Visually impaired Internal Auditing alumnus, Humphrey Mohajane, delivered an inspiring keynote address. He shared his journey as a TUT student, reflecting on the vital role the Disability Unit played in his academic and personal development.
He urged current students with disabilities to register with the unit, emphasising the benefits of its supportive and inclusive environment. “I was assigned a tutor to assist with my studies and later joined the Student Development Support team, which gave me valuable experience that assisted in shaping my career,” he said.
Diagnosed with an eye infection at a young age, the Advanced Diploma graduate encouraged others not to let their condition define them. “What people see as an obstacle can be your greatest strength. My journey has not been easy, but I chose success over pity,” Mohajane said.
The event also allowed students to experience life from the perspective of people with disabilities by using assistive equipment around campus. The exercise raised awareness of the daily challenges students with disabilities face, particularly in spaces that are not fully accessible.
Through this hands-on experience, participants gained a deeper appreciation of their peers’ resilience and determination. The initiative strengthened awareness, encouraged empathy, as well as underscored TUT’s ongoing commitment to fostering inclusivity and ensuring equal opportunities for all students.
