Katherine Wiggill, who obtained six out of seven distinctions in the 2023 Matric examinations, is one of many talented, deserving and passionate first-year students enrolled at the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment’s (FEBE) Department of Architecture and Industrial Design.

Although less than 100 students who were rigorously tested were selected, the School of Architecture received more than 5000 applications last year.

The 19-year-old Katherine matriculated from Midstream College, obtaining an average of 85.9% during her Independent Examinations Board exams.

She has always been inclined towards creativity; therefore, she has explored several creative career paths. However, in time, she developed a strong interest in architecture and decided to pursue it as a profession. Her choice of subjects, including Engineering Graphics and Design and Art, helped her secure a place at the School of Architecture.

"Because of my passion for creating beautiful and practical spaces, I knew that architecture was the perfect profession for me. Even though I considered other options, like interior design, my skills and values align best with architecture," said Wiggill.

When selecting an institution to study at, TUT was Wiggill's top choice. "There are only a few universities in the country that offer an architecture degree. After doing my research and speaking with friends and family who have attended TUT's programme, it was clear that TUT is the best option for me," said Wiggill.
