The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), through the Department of Applied Languages has partnered with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) to provide student with opportunities to review learners' essays as part of their Work Integrated Learning (WIL).

The initiative, which was announced yesterday, 12 March 2024, is crucial not only for the linguistic fraternity but for the entire field of Humanities and Social Sciences.

Highlighting the importance of African Languages, Dr Tebogo J. Rakgogo, HoD for Applied Languages said: “We are elated about our collaboration with the NYDA. One key aspect is the chance for learners to express themselves in any of South Africa's official languages as outlined in Section 6(1) of the Constitution.”

“What is even more exciting is the opportunity to review and provide feedback on essays written in our diverse African Languages”, he said.

Dr Rakgogo underlined that every African language is a treasure trove of history, culture, and values. When a language disappears, so too does a part of our history, culture, values and sense of identity.

“Moreover, the academic freedom to write in any language aligns perfectly with the theme on the significance of commemorating 30 years of democracy. This is an integral part of the constitutional democracy we are celebrating and it must be protected.”

“On behalf of the department, we appreciate and value the opportunity for our final year students to engage in the review process as part of their Work Integrated Learning”, Dr Rakgogo concluded.
