Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) athlete, Asande Mthembu, a second-year Computer Engineering Systems student, leaped to victory at the 13th African Games held in Ghana during March 2024, claiming the gold medal in the long jump with a distance of 7.86m.

Mthembu credits the experience to hard work, sharpening his mental focus and confidence in his own abilities. "Competing internationally has been a game-changer for me. Winning outside South Africa has definitely given me a newfound edge."

He commended the supportive and conducive environment at TUT. "The support and love from teammates and management is incredible. It really boosted my confidence as well as empowering me to give my all and represent TUT proudly.”

Understanding the importance of role-models for the youth, Mthembu also cherishes the impact he and his performance had on younger fans. “The highlight was when kids came asking to have their pictures taken with me afterwards. If those15 minutes on the track can inspire only one child, it is worth it every time," he reflected.

Mthembu strives to be a positive role model for other athletes, as well as a brand ambassador for TUT. "By increasing my personal reputation positively, I can contribute to TUT’s reputation and its goal of becoming the top sport university in the country. “This win marks a significant achievement for both Mthembu and TUT, confirming their standing at the forefront of African athletics.
