The Chancellor’s Award recipient, Reagile Frances Makwela, was recognised for consistent, outstanding performance in the Faculty of Humanities. Pretoria born and bred, Reagile enrolled for a Diploma in Integrated Communication at TUT in 2021, majoring in Public Relations. She completed it in 2023 with 19 distinctions.

“I am delighted that my achievements are acknowledged and I take pride in knowing that all the hard work I put in during my studies was not in vain. It is heart-warming that others can draw inspiration from my efforts,” said Reagile.

Being the first person in her family to obtain a university qualification, has motivated her younger sister to pursue her own studies. When asked why she chose to study Public Relations, Reagile said she took a career guidance test just after completing high school. Her personality, abilities and interests determined Public Relations to be the most suitable choice for her.

Reagile is currently enrolled for the Advanced Diploma in Integrated Communication and is employed as a student assistant at the Faculty of Humanities. According to her, she intends using the qualification as a steppingstone to further her career in academia.

“I want to further my studies and to ultimately venture into an academic career. In as much as I want to explore the corporate world, my passion lies in teaching others and sharing my knowledge for their advancement. Thus, I hope to become a lecturer or even a professor someday,” said Reagile.

On 10 April, the Department of Law, Safety & Security Management also saw Local SRC President, Emanuel Makhurupetji, receiving a Diploma in Traffic Safety and Municipal Police Management.

Upon receiving his qualification, Emanuel said: “My heart is filled with a combination of emotions. Last year was rather challenging since I was involved in student governance as campus treasurer and became campus president just before writing my final examinations but hard work and burning the midnight oil, paid off.”

On 12 April, the last day of graduations, two former SR members who studied at the Department of Public Management, Mohale Prince Mohale and Vincent Lucky Nkambule, also received the postgraduate Diploma in Public Affairs (Local Government).
