Robbie Wessels, a Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) Drama alumnus, a well-rounded individual, skilled in many different areas, is a force to be reckoned with in the entertainment industry. With a career spanning more than two decades, he has made a name for himself as an actor, filmmaker, singer and songwriter.
Singer, songwriter, actor and filmmaker, Robbie Wessels.
"I am grateful to have studied at TUT. The experience to learn in a practical way, certainly prepared me for the industry. Their way of lecturing was perfect for me - 8% theory and 92% acting. If it were more theory-based, I probably would have failed," he said.
Robbie's journey started at the Faculty of Arts and Design in 1999, where he discovered his passion for music. "I sang to residence students around the fire and that is where my love for music started. Now, I sing more than I act."
He got his first acting gig through TUT. He then went on to become a household name as Poena in the popular TV series, Gauteng-alêng-alêng. "That role alone brought with it a multitude of opportunities. I am eternally grateful for the experience."
Robbie's advice to aspiring actors is simple: "Get qualified. Don't rely just on talent. It's a tough industry and you must always be prepared. More importantly, you must have a passion for what you study to enjoy it."
With a successful music career, including a debut album that sold over 120,000 copies, Robbie proves that hard work and passion can lead to success. "My mom had a big influence on my study choices. She saw the love for the art industry in me and encouraged me to take it further because she shared the same love."
As a true Renaissance man, Robbie continues to inspire and entertain audiences. His story serves as a testament to the power of dedication and the importance of following one's passion.
"I love what I do and I am grateful for the opportunities I have had. I am proud to be a TUT alumnus and hope that I inspire others to follow their dreams."
