The Vocal Art and Dance programmes of TUT's Faculty of Arts and Design will join creative forces for a stage production of Mozart's Coronation Mass at the Breytenbach Theatre in August. The production will be a first as it will be simultaneously interpreted through dance.
The traditional mass celebrates the Christian faith. However, Mozart's Coronation Mass, because of its victorious and joyful spirit, has been used over the years for the coronation of various kings, hence its nickname.
Mozart's Coronation Mass, as such, has seen its fair share of splendour and glory throughout history. Now, for the first time, the glorious, sacred ambience given to the work by its spiritual origins, and the magnificent grandeur lent to it by its association with royal coronations, will be interpreted simultaneously through dance.
To add to the richness of the performances, the second half will feature 'Kuhle Kwethu' (Everything is Well) by renowned composer Phelelani Mnomiya.
Originally commissioned in honour of international guests to South Africa, the work celebrates the country's unique diversity and the distinctive harmony that South Africans have managed to create despite their troubled past.
Performances are as follows: 25 August (15:00) and 27 August (19:00)
Tickets are R70 per person, R35 (students) and R50 per person for block bookings.
