Following a rigorous vetting process, Prof Karendra Devroop, a Professor of Music in the Faculty of Arts and Design at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), has been nominated by two international Grammy members to serve as a Voting Member of the Grammys.

The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (the Grammys) has subsequently officially appointed Prof Devroop as a voting member, effective from August 2024.

The appointment process for voting members is extensive, often exceeding a year. During this time, existing Grammy voting members nominate candidates, who are then vetted based on their international standing within the music industry.

Only a select number of the Grammys' more than 20 000 members are invited to become voting members.

Prof Devroop is a renowned jazz saxophonist and pianist, as well as an experienced academic. He joined the TUT Faculty of Arts and Design earlier this year and has an extensive background in music education and research, particularly in jazz and music psychology.

When asked about the significance of the Grammy recognition, he responded: “The highest honour an artist can achieve is to be recogised by your peers. Being recognised by the Grammys is indeed the highest point of my career. I look forward to serving the institution.”
