The Tshwane University of Technology’s Institute for the Future of Work (IFoW) in partnership with Microsoft will launch a one-year short-blended learning course on Advanced Digital Skills on 2 October 2024.

Speaking on the partnership with Microsoft, Tseliso Mohlomi, Senior Director at IFoW said the programme is aimed at addressing the lack of access to critical and relevant 4IR skills in South Africa. “This will help to create the capacity needed in order to have suitably qualified Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Engineers and train large numbers of unemployed youth.”

Mohlomi also highlighted that recent university graduates find themselves in a competitive job market, facing the challenge of securing their desired positions. “While it may seem overwhelming, there's a game-changing aspect that can set you apart: acquiring advanced digital skills in areas including artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing and data science. We encourage our graduates, staff members and alumni to enrol for this very important programme, which will provide them with a competitive advantage, cross-industry relevance, future-proofing and career growth,” emphasised Mohlomi.

The 12-month programme will use a blended learning model that includes the integration of self-study, online learning, classroom instructor-led training and skills labs – apprenticeship. Also included in the programme is Mentorship and Coaching by industry experts, Business skills, Microsoft Azure AI Associate Certification, Flipped Classroom, Guest Lecturers, Career days, Examination and Certification.

Commenting on the Advanced Digital Skills programme, Asif Vally, National Technology Officer at Microsoft South Africa confirmed that it has been developed in collaboration with leading universities and employers and is designed to meet in-demand skills for an increasingly digital economy. “We believe that the Microsoft Curriculum will develop the skills that employers value, encouraging students to explore, transform, model, and visualise data, ultimately providing them with the foundation and opportunity to create next generation intelligent solutions” he said.
