Postgraduate Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts (Studio) alumna Kutlwano Monyai continues to make strides in the art world, captivating audiences with her storytelling through visual art.
Monyai achieved a major milestone when she won the Absa L’Atelier competition on Saturday, 16 November 2024, officially becoming the competition’s South African Ambassador for the coming year.
The Absa L’Atelier is an annual art competition that has previously empowered young visual artists from 12 African countries, providing them with opportunities to broaden their reach, develop their careers and gain well-deserved recognition. One of 12 finalists, Monyai stood out and impressed the judges with her exceptional work, clinching the top honour.
Reflecting on her journey from being selected as a finalist and the anticipation leading up to the announcement, Monyai shared her excitement with TUT Alumni Relations.
"As the date of the announcement approached, I was simultaneously anxious, excited and looking forward to it. On the journey, I met incredible artists with whom I could engage and learn from."
Winning the competition and becoming the 2024 Ambassador has been a surreal experience for her. "I'm still pinching myself. Looking at the pictures of the event and the experience, makes it more real. It was a beautiful experience."

Monyai competed against another TUT alumnus and colleague, Odirile Khune Motsiri, who also reached the competition’s final round. Although he did not win, Motsiri celebrated an exceptional year with two significant solo exhibitions:
- Debut at the Pretoria Art Museum
- Threads of Resilience at the University of the Free State Gallery
Motsiri’s work explored themes of identity and resilience, evoking heartfelt engagement from audiences.
Reflecting on his success, he said: "These exhibitions allowed me to delve deeper into my themes while engaging with supportive and insightful audiences."
