The Tshwane University of Technology’s Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC) has taken a bold step to launch A re Ageng: ISRC Trust Fund, an initiative designed to address financial exclusion among students.

The initiative aims to raise R30 Million, while the university has provided a seed funding of R5 Million readily available to alleviate the growing burden of student debt for the 2025 academic year.

Speaking on the Trust Fund, ISRC President General, Banele Ntsele said the student leaders are not only focussed on raising funds, “We are also collapsing the walls of inequality to ensure that no student at TUT is forced to abandon their education due to financial exclusion or an inability to pay tuition or registration fees”.

He added that the initiative prioritises marginalised and academically deserving students and those in genuine financial need, ensuring that financial constraints do not hinder their education.

This initiative reflects the ISRC’s commitment to supporting students in need.

The fund will also make provision for returning South African students who have not taken a gap year exceeding one year and have passed at least 50% of their subjects in the previous year. Students must provide proof of financial need, such as SASSA documents. If these are unavailable, an affidavit explaining their financial situation, along with certified copies of their parents’ or guardians’ IDs must be submitted.

Students with outstanding debt above R250,000, and those enrolled in part-time or short courses and students registered for Higher Certificate programs are not eligible.

A review committee, consisting of ISRC members and university representatives from Financial Aid, Advancement and Partnerships Office (APO), and Student Affairs will evaluate applications to ensure fair distribution of funds.
