Staff from the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (FoICT) recently attended the Microsoft AI Tour, held at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg. Showcasing Microsoft's latest advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), the event provided valuable insights into the ways Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping industries and driving business innovation.

Four staff members from FoICT’s First Year and Foundation Unit, Quintin Magaseng, Simon Sekele, Rhulani Salani and Nkulumo Nkuna, were selected to attend, specifically because they are preparing to become facilitators of the AI programme that will be offered in collaboration with the Institute for the Future of Work (IFOW). The dynamic mix of presentations, live demonstrations and workshops were aimed at both technical professionals and business leaders.

The AI Tour focused on several key areas, starting with the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Innovations track, where Microsoft experts presented groundbreaking developments in machine learning, data analytics and cloud computing. Attendees were given a deep dive into the company's cutting-edge tools and technologies that drive the future of AI.

Applied examples and applications also featured prominently, highlighting how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming industries such as healthcare, finance and manufacturing. These examples underscore the tangible impact Artificial Intelligence (AI) has on improving business operations, streamlining processes and enhancing decision-making capabilities.

Interactive hands-on demos during which participants could explore AI tools and platforms like Azure AI and Microsoft Cognitive Services enabled attendees to experience AI technology in action.

In addition, workshops to equip developers, data scientists and IT professionals with the skills needed to build and deploy AI solutions were presented. These sessions offered a more technical look at the tools and frameworks that are shaping the AI landscape.

The excellent networking opportunities enabled participants to connect with industry experts, visionaries, peers and potential collaborators in the ever-expanding AI and tech ecosystem.

By attending the Microsoft AI Tour, the FoICT staff gained first-hand exposure to the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI), as well as knowledge that will undoubtedly benefit their work in academia and beyond. Their participation also aligns with TUT’s ongoing commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements and providing students with a curriculum that reflects the latest industry trends.

As the AI revolution continues to gain momentum, events like the Microsoft AI Tour help shape the future of technology, both in South Africa and globally. TUT's involvement in such initiatives ensures that the University remains a key player in fostering innovation and equipping future leaders with the skills they need to succeed in an AI-driven world.
