On 8 December 2023, the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) welcomed a delegation from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). The high-powered NSFAS delegation was led by Board Chairperson Mr Ernest Khosa.

The TUT team of executives included the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Mr Theo Madurai, the Executive Director: Student Affairs and Extracurricular Development (SAED), Dr Azwitamisi Nthangeni, the Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor, Mr Jonas Magedi and members of the Institutional Student Representative Council (ISRC).

The aim of the meeting was to discuss, from a student residence perspective, various issues pertaining to readiness for the 2024 Academic Year.

The NSFAS Board Chairperson, Mr Ernest Khosa, outlined the NSFAS short term plan as well as its long-term vision for student accommodation for the sector.

Noting that TUT is the largest contact University in the country, Mr Khosa pledged NSFAS’s readiness to work hand in hand with the University in the piloting of a new approach aimed at improving quality of NSFAS funded student accommodation services. In the process, all parties must ensure compliance with student housing norms and standard established by the department in 2015 - inclusive of the spatial, nutritional and social needs of students.

TUT Management and students highlighted that care should be taken to ensure that the envisaged changes do not negatively affect the student community.

In conclusion, the University and NSFAS agreed to continue working closely together to ensure the successful implementation of the accommodation project in 2024.
