Dr Vathiswa Papu-Zamxaka, the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation, and Engagement, recently hosted a delegation of leading Russian universities, led by Elena Tumavoka, Advisor to the Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, along with colleagues from the Russian Embassy.
This engagement that took place at the Council Chamber on TUT’s Pretoria Campus, formed part of the University’s continued expansion of its global academic partnerships, reinforcing its commitment to international collaboration within the BRICS framework.
Joining Dr Papu-Zamxaka were TUT assistant deans from various faculties and other professors, highlighting the University’s cross-disciplinary commitment to international collaboration.
The discussions focused on furthering partnerships in research, innovation and student exchange opportunities between TUT and Russian institutions. The engagement provided a platform for the parties to share their respective activities, initiatives and strategic priorities, aiming to identify areas of mutual interest for academic collaboration.
Elena Tumavoka spoke about popular academic programmes in Russia, particularly in the fields of engineering and technology. She highlighted that these programmes offer bursaries that cover most student needs, as well as present an opportunity for networking, skills development and further academic advancement.

Dr Papu-Zamxaka emphasized the importance of the meeting, noting that TUT is dedicated to fostering global academic exchanges that drive innovation and knowledge-sharing. She added that the University remains committed to strengthening international academic networks, promoting mobility programmes and facilitating access to funding opportunities for students and researchers.
The engagement marks an important step in deepening TUT’s global academic footprint and strengthening its role within BRICS-driven research and higher education collaboration, while opening new avenues for students and researchers to pursue academic excellence and international collaboration.
