The Faculty of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) is celebrating one of its brightest leaders this Women’s Month – Dr Mmatshuene Anna Segooa, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Informatics. Her academic leadership and mentorship continuously shape student success and global collaboration.
Dr Segooa has been instrumental in driving internationalisation within the Faculty. She spearheaded the 2020–2023 Erasmus+-funded partnership with Universidad Politécnica de Valencia (UPV) in Spain, facilitating postgraduate exchange opportunities and staff mobility. The initiative’s success has secured a follow-up funding cycle for 2023–2026, with new student and staff exchange opportunities set for August 2025 and January 2026. She is currently working to expand these opportunities to African universities, with a focus on building partnerships in Kenya.
Her influence extends beyond international partnerships reaching deeply into her own Faculty and other University structures, where it is both felt and appreciated. Ranked among TUT’s Top 500 academic authors, Dr Segooa contributes to strategic structures including Senate, the Women in Leadership Executive and industry collaboration projects. She also plays a key role in curriculum design, postgraduate supervision and short learning programme development, while serving on departmental committees that shape research and teaching strategies.
Dedicated to student-centred learning, Dr Segooa embraces innovative teaching methods such as flipped classrooms, project-based learning and peer-to-peer collaboration, enhanced by digital platforms like Microsoft Teams, D2L Brightspace and Google Docs. Her structured approach ensures students are industry-ready, supported by progress reporting, guest lectures and real-time feedback.
Dr Segooa’s passion for outreach inspires young learners, even beyond the classroom, to pursue ICT as a career. Her training in Finland through the Vocational Teacher Education Programme and Train-the-Trainer initiative, has enriched her teaching, embedding international best practices in her work.
“As an educator my goal is to cultivate inclusive spaces where students can thrive and develop the critical skills they need to excel in a fast-changing digital world,” Dr Segooa said.
This Women’s Month, the Faculty of ICT honours Dr Segooa for her leadership, innovation and her role as a mentor and inspiration – a true example of women driving excellence in higher education.
