Abongile Dumako, Advanced Diploma in Integrated Communication alumnus from the Tshwane University of Technology, has been appointed to one of the top positions at the South African Broadcasting Corporation’s (SABC) Channel Africa.

The newly appointed Programme Manager’s appointment comes as no surprise, given his 15 years of extensive experience within SABC News and Current Affairs, where he served across various regional newsrooms. Dumako later broadened his professional scope in the public sector, taking on the role of Communication and Stakeholder Management Manager at the City of Johannesburg.

Reflecting on his new role, Dumako said it is clear - the stakes are high and delivery will be key.

“There are a lot of expectations, not only from the employer but also from myself. I must ensure that the team I work with feels empowered - from pulling me aside to tell me when I do something wrong to identifying when there is room for improvement.”

“I have to make sure I deliver and execute the tasks that have been entrusted to me,” he said.

Recalling the moment he received the news of his appointment, Dumako described it as feeling like Christmas.

“I was excited because it meant there are things I do right that the employer recognised.”

Looking ahead, Dumako aims to shift the narrative across Africa and align Channel Africa’s programming with the African Union’s 2030 Vision, which aims to position the continent as a leader in technological advancement.

“Issues like unemployment and youth development are close to my heart. I believe the path I am on is wide enough to help bridge the gap of youth unemployment in Africa - I have the tools and the support to make a difference.”

Dumako holds a BA Honours Degree in Development Studies and a National Diploma in Public Relations Management from UNISA, as well as an Advanced Diploma in Integrated Communication from TUT. He is currently also pursuing a Master's Degree in Communication.
