Tshwane University of Technology's Performing Arts students are set to shine at the University of the Witwatersrand's 2024 O-Week programme. This exciting collaboration provides an opportunity for TUT's budding talents to showcase their creativity and artistic skills on a wider stage.

The participating students, under the direction of Msindisi Messiah Nxumalo, are ready to captivate audiences with their theatre production titled June the 1st. Presented as part of the Open Stage programme at last year's TUT Arts Festival, this gripping play deals with mental illness.

"June the 1st is a powerful theatrical masterpiece that seamlessly intertwines acting and dance to tell a story of profound human experiences. The narrative delves into stigma, judgmental attitudes, family struggles and mental health,” says Nxumalo.

Nxumalo is an Advanced Diploma student who does not shy away from difficult topics. “The play explores how living with a mental illness has a domino effect on so many lives,” he says.

He adds that he is honoured to see the play grow and be showcased at Wits University.

“TUT's participation enriches the cultural tapestry of the university community, offering a unique and diverse perspective,” says Wits University’s O-Week curator, Lerato Sekele.

June the 1st promises a unique blend of storytelling, performance art and a profound exploration of the human psyche. Don't miss this powerful production.

The cast includes Performing Arts students Kamuhelo Mailula, Sindiswa Macingwane, Khanyisile Xaba and Thami Hlongwane.
