Ivy Morulane, newly appointed Disability Unit Coordinator at the Tshwane University of Technology, Alum from TUT’s School of Education and long-time disability activist, has been elected Chairwoman of the Higher and Further Education Disability Services Association (HEDSA), Gauteng Region.

She is an active member of the advocacy and rights-based non-profit organisation that represents disability services in Higher and Further Education Institutions (HEDSA).

As Chairperson, she will oversee the development of an inclusive PSET system for the Gauteng Region, assist Post-School Education and Training (PSET), institutions towards the creation of an environment that is supportive of individuals with disabilities, serving as the chair of the HEDSA National Executive Committee and guaranteeing that disability compliance is mainstreamed in all PSET institutions in the region.

Talking about her election as HEDSA Chairperson in Gauteng, she said: “This position will strengthen our relationship with DHET and other disability units in the Gauteng region. It will enable us to share best practices and learn from one another as we work towards the common goal of standardising our services and sharing resources.”

She has been working as a SDS Practitioner since 2008, supporting and advocating for the inclusion of students with disabilities. Hence, her Masters’ Degree in Education also focused on "Challenges Faced by Students with Visual Impairments at a University of Technology”.
