At the start of 2026, the Hammanskraal-born student enrolled in the Department of Computer Science at the Tshwane University of Technology as an Information and Communication Technology student, while also nurturing his passion for music and creating soulful melodies on his saxophone in his free time.
He explained why he chose a career in ICT. “ICT professionals are in high demand, the field offers excellent career opportunities and one has a strong chance of employment upon graduation,” he said.
In addition, he selected TUT to remain close to home while growing academically and musically. “Being in Pretoria allows me to continue developing my music career while pursuing my studies, as most opportunities that can advance my music are located here,” he explained.
Modise describes his first year thus far as enriching. “Up to now, my time as a student has been wonderful. I have learned a great deal in a short period and have had the opportunity to meet many inspiring and talented people,” he said.
He began playing the saxophone in mid-2018. According to him it was not a single moment that inspired him, it was more nuanced. “I was drawn to the unique shape of the instrument and inspired by senior students at my music school who would improvise and create their own music,” he said.
Music plays a central role in his life. “Music is more than a hobby; it is a vital part of my life. If I do not practice for a day, I feel incomplete. It is both a passion and a form of personal expression that I cannot live without,” he said.
Balancing academics and music can be challenging, but Khumo has found a way to manage both effectively. He follows a structured schedule that allows him to keep up with his studies while dedicating time to his musical practice. “So far, I have not encountered major challenges, as the academic pressure has yet to intensify,” he added.
Looking ahead, Modise has big plans for his future. “In the next five years, I see myself as an award-winning music composer who has successfully combined my academic knowledge with my passion for music,” he shared confidently.
