Who We Are

The Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Innovation (CSTI) is an interdisciplinary research and development institute at Tshwane University of Technology. The Centre focuses on the intersection of sustainability, digitalisation, and inclusive tourism development, aiming to enhance the sector’s resilience and adaptability within the dynamic global and local landscapes. As a research and training centre, CSTI works closely with industry partners, local communities, and international institutions to create impactful, evidence-based solutions that drive economic, environmental, and social sustainability across the tourism value chain.

CSTI’s activities are structured around three core pillars:

  3. Education and Capacity Building: Develop and deliver training programs for tourism professionals. Create educational resources and materials. Empower local communities to participate in sustainable tourism initiatives. Provide both formal and informal Skills Development programs providing specialised training and workshops for students, SMMEs, and tourism practitioners, fostering a highly skilled workforce that supports the needs of a sustainable tourism economy. Partnering with local communities to develop tourism projects that prioritise cultural preservation, environmental stewardship, and economic inclusivity, ensuring mutual benefits for both host communities and visitors.

The Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Innovation is uniquely positioned to transform the tourism sector by addressing pressing environmental, social, and governance challenges.

We aim to create an inclusive, resilient, and sustainable tourism industry across all levels — from local communities to the international stage. By leveraging best practices, fostering innovation, and advancing ESG-driven policies, CSTI is dedicated to a future where tourism benefits people, the planet, and the economy in a balanced and sustainable manner. The purpose of CSTI is to provide innovative solutions through interdisciplinary and transformative research and provide strategic direction and capability building to the industry and the communities in the tourism value chain.
