Narrativising Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and challenging the arts by questioning its purpose and value, emerged as prominent themes and potent healing mechanisms during the inaugural TUT GBV Research Niche Area symposium on Artivism as a tool to combat GBV. Hosted by the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) Faculty of Arts and Design on 20 May, twelve speakers, predominantly from arts disciplines, convened to discuss and strategise ways to create significant impact and develop intervention strategies – the primary goal of the niche area.

The Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) and Intel have taken a significant step forward in preparing students for the future of work. Twenty-year-old TUT and the 56-year-old Intel have joined forces in establishing the TUT-Intel AI Career Tech Centre. This center will ensure that all TUT students across all TUT campuses learn the most important language of the 21st Century - the language of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The TUT-Intel AI Career Tech Centre is a first of its kind in the world.

The 2024 SETA Skills Summit (SSS), themed Together, Skilling the Nation, hosted by the Association of Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) Chairpersons and the SETA CEOs Forum, saw the launch of the SETA Integrated High Impact Programmes. The two-day summit, during which Prof Pius Owolawi, Tshwane University of Technology’s Head of the Department of Computer Systems Engineering and MICTSETA 4IR Research Chair, shared his views on modernizing technologies within the context of developments, trends, patterns and skills needed in various economic sectors, also featured rigorous dialogue aimed at strengthening, promoting and showcasing the integrated work of SETAs within the skills development sector.

With the country and institutions of higher learning facing continuously increasing challenges of drug abuse, which create a lot of problems in society, the Directorate of Student Development and Support (SDS) hosted an interactive Substance Abuse Awareness and Information session to inform students were informed about the dangers of substance abuse and prevention methods available to assist those that are struggling with addiction.

Kgaugelo Modise from the Tshwane University of Technology’s Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FEBE), made history during the recent Autumn graduation ceremonies when she became the first female graduate to obtain a doctorate in Industrial Engineering. The title of her thesis is Development of a predictive model for energy and carbon efficiency for future transport manufacturing enterprises.

Prof Amira Osman, South African Research Chair in Spatial Transformation and prof in Architecture at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), is leading a project to introduce special pathways for bicycles in Zanzibar, especially in the Stone Town area. The need to have more cyclists to reduce congestion of vehicles and traffic jams, will also be addressed. In her opening address at a workshop held at the Maru Maru hotel, she explained the importance of the Zanzibar cycling infrastructure project to contribute to ongoing conversations about African cities in particular, and cities of the global south in general.
